Some second half thoughts from the Coliseum where the Mountaineers trail Notre Dame 26-16 at the half.
–The 16 points are a season high first half low for WVU.
–The Mountaineers have been tied or have trailed at the half in seven consecutive games now dating back to the Marshall game which was tied 30-30 at the break.
–We heard all about Notre Dame’s three point shooters and the fact that four starters had 20 or more threes coming into the game. Tonight, The Irish have killed the Mountaineers inside as the Irish have had too much easy. Notre Dame has 18 points in the paint and 12 second chance points.
–Cooley and 6-8 swing man Scott Martin have been the players who have hurt WVU the most. Cooley averages 11/8. He has 12 points and eight rebounds at the first media time out of the second half. Martin averages 9.0 points per game. He already has nine points on 4-5 shooting from the field.
–The Mountaineers have come out and hit five of their first six shots from the field in the second half as they are making a run. WVU hasn’t shot a three yet after going 1-11 from three in the first half. The Mountaineers have done it by going inside as Deniz Kilicli has eight second half points including a jump hook from the elbow. Jabarie Hinds also has a couple of layups.
–The Mountaineers did not shoot the ball well at all in the first half at 24% but they are at 65% (11-17) in the second half. The Mountaineers have rebounded much better as well. Again, they are getting the ball inside and getting the ball to the rim in the second half. Truck Bryant has yet to attempt a shot in the first 14:30 of the second half.
–Now Kevin Jones is starting to heat up as he has scored WVU’s last five points including a three for the lead.
–Another very solid offensive game for Kilicli as he is 6-8 from the field in the second half.
–Notre Dame had missed its first eight three point attempts in the second half until Eric Atkins and Jerian Grant hit threes on back to back times down the floor to re-take the lead with 1:40 to go.
–Make it three in a row from three for the Irish. They have made the plays the plays down the stretch to win for the third consecutive time on the road in the league.
The Mountaineers will lose ground as four teams ahead of them in the standings won tonight.
1) Syracuse 11-1
2) Marquette 9-3
3) Notre Dame 8-3
4) Georgetown 8-4
5) Cincinnati 7-4
5) South Florida 7-4
5) Louisville 7-4
8) WVU 6-6
–Also, Kevin Jones will finish with 14 points as his streak of 20+ ends at nine.
