WVIAC Men’s Basketball Wednesday Recap

Wheeling Jesuit 109, West Liberty 99

WHEELING, W. Va. – Wheeling Jesuit shot 54.2 percent from the field and placed six in double figures to help the squad down No. 1 West Liberty 109-99.

Steve Catich poured in a game-high 33 points for WJU in the win. He also had 10 rebounds. Recardo Gaddy netted 20 points while Joe Prati had 16. Ben Siefert totaled 14 points and eight assists while Marquis Moore garnered 11 points and six assists. Obi Ukwuoma amassed just five points but had 10 assists and 10 rebounds. WJU hit 21 free throws in the contest and 14 three-point buckets.

The Hilltoppers saw their 60-game regular-season league winning streak come to a halt, with the last defeat coming Dec. 12, 2009 at WV State. WLU was paced by Alex Falk’s 28 points. Shawn Dyer came off the bench to score 20. Tim Hausfeld had 15 points and seven assists while CJ Hester totaled 14 points and 13 boards. Cedric Harris netted 10 points for the visitors. WLU buried 18 three-point shots in the game, hitting 43.9 percent from downtown as a team.

WV State 72, Glenville State 57

GLENVILLE, W. Va. – WV State notched a 72-57 road win at Glenville State by canning 61.5 percent of its shots from the floor in the game.

David Ford scored a team-best 19 points in the win. Robbie Lewis was perfect from the field, hitting all nine attempts, for 18 points. He also grabbed seven rebounds. Corey Bethea posted 17 points while Delrico Lane had nine rebounds and six assists for the Yellow Jackets.

Jamel Morris sank seven shots for a game-high 21 points in the loss. Kevin Gray netted 14 for the Pioneers. Nate Cash had four of the team’s eight steals. GSC sank nine shots from three-point land.  

Seton Hill 60, Alderson-Broaddus 52

GREENSBURG, Pa. – Seton Hill posted a 60-52 home win over visiting Alderson-Broaddus Wednesday evening.

Matt Miller guided the Griffins with 24 points to go along with four assists and two steals. He also totaled seven boards. Chris Giles netted 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Andrew Cressler dished out four assists.

Kurklin Bohanon garnered 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Battlers. Nate Barnes had a solid all-around game with 14 points, six boards and six assists. He also had two assists. A-B drilled seven three-point shots, four of which came from Bohanon.

Charleston 69, Concord 64

ATHENS, W. Va. – Charleston outscored Concord by 14 in the second half to come from behind and win 69-64.

PJ Reyes netted a game-high 23 points and pulled down seven rebounds for the victors. Eladio Espinosa garnered 16 points and 12 rebounds while Evan Faulkner chipped in 11. Philip Outley dished out three assists.

Romel Kemp had a team-high 18 points for the Mountain Lions in the loss. Corey Neeley chipped in 15 points while Javaughn Acree-Manuel tallied 14. Burnell Granderson grabbed a team-best nine boards. Mike Boyd had four assists.

WV Wesleyan 86, Pitt-Johnstown 69

BUCKHANNON, W. Va. – WV Wesleyan used a balanced scoring attack to defeat visiting Pitt-Johnstown 86-69.

Raymont McElroy totaled a team-best 21 points while Colby Wohlleb amassed 20 in the win for the Bobcats. Kelsey Williams recorded 16 points and 12 rebounds while Reggie Chambers accounted for 14 points and 10 rebounds. WVWC drilled 52.3 percent of its shots from the field.

The Mountain Cats were paced by Patrick Grubbs, who totaled 23 points and 11 rebounds. Nick Novak added 22 while Jordan Miller connected for 11. As a team, UPJ sank 50 percent of its shots from the floor.

Ohio Valley 100, Bluefield State 90

BLUEFIELD, W. Va. – Ohio Valley posted a 100-90 road win at Bluefield State Wednesday evening.

Kendall Allison led the victors with a team-best 30 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Rodney Everage accounted for 17 points, 14 boards and seven blocks while Austin Cunningham had 14 points and nine assists. Jordan Brooks and Osvaldas Gaizaukas each had 14 while Lance Jones totaled 11.

In the loss, rookie Chase Morgan erupted for 37 points and seven assists in 40 minutes of action. Roy Cooper hit for 20 markers while Daven Morris garnered 18 points and 11 rebounds. Cooper narrowly missed a double-double with nine boards. Johnny Uhegwu added nine points and eight boards.

Shepherd 87, Davis & Elkins 67

ELKINS, W. Va. – Shepherd’s strong second half enabled the visitors to come away with an 87-67 victory over Davis & Elkins.

Chad Moore paved the way with 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Rams in the win. Brantley Osborne connected for 19 points and had four assists. Marcus Pilgrim netted 17 points while Chauncey Burgazli added 12. Malik Dauda garnered nine points and seven boards. As a team, SU hit 53.1 percent from the floor.

Ian Pinckney drained seven shots for 18 points for the Senators in the loss. PJ Turner had a huge contest with 17 points and 11 of his team’s 18 assists in the contest. Malik Tinsley chipped in 11 points. D&E buried 47.4 percent of its shots.
