West Liberty Wins Men’s Title, Tournament Set

For the third consecutive season, the West Liberty men’s basketball team will receive a first-round bye for the upcoming WVIAC Tournament after claiming the league’s regular-season crown.

The Hilltoppers concluded the regular season with a record of 26-2 overall and a 21-1 mark in the WVIAC. The squad totaled a power rating of 187.27 and will not play until the quarterfinals on Thursday at the Civic Center.

Charleston (23-5, 18-4) nabbed the No. 2 seed by finishing with a power rating of 151.82. Wheeling Jesuit secured third with a win on Saturday. The Cardinals (20-8, 16-6) amassed a power rating of 141.36. WV Wesleyan completed the regular season at 19-7 overall and 15-7 in WVIAC play. The Bobcats produced a power rating of 132.27.

Alderson-Broaddus is the No. 5 seed at 17-9, 14-8. The Battlers posted a power rating of 118.64. Concord edged Pitt-Johnstown for the No. 6 spot. The Mountain Lions (15-11, 12-10) totaled 98.64 power rating points while Pitt-Johnstown took seventh with 98.18 points. The Mountain Cats finished the regular season at 14-13 overall and 12-10 in league play.

Securing a home game at the No. 8 position was WV State. The Yellow Jackets (14-12, 12-10) totaled a power rating of 97.27. Shepherd came in at No. 9 with a power rating of 94.55. The Rams head into the postseason with a record of 13-13 overall and 11-11 in WVIAC action.

Seton Hill (11-14, 9-13) claimed the No. 10 position with a power rating of 74.55. Ohio Valley (8-17, 8-14) is No. 11 with a rating of 60.91 while Fairmont State (9-17, 7-15) is No. 12 with a power rating of 50.45.

Glenville State (43.18 points), Davis & Elkins (32.27 points) and Bluefield State round out the 13th-15th spots in the final WVIAC regular-season standings.   

First-round match-ups are played on the campuses of the higher seeds. All games are slated to be played on Tuesday, Feb. 28.
