Spring Practice #2 News & Notes

Two practices in shorts and Doc Holliday is happy with his team so far. Practices have been up tempo, players have had a bounce in their step and the guys look good. However, as Holliday is quick to point out, everybody looks good in shorts.
“Unfortunately you don’t play this game in shorts and when you put the pads on that’s when you separate the really good players from the guys in shorts,” reminded Holliday following Thursday’s practice.
Marshall will lace up the pads for the first time on Saturday.
Depth Breeding Competition
Doc Holliday has been quick to point out over the offseason Marshall is getting close to having 85 scholarship players on the roster and that means depth and nearly every position. Billy Mitchell continues to run with the 1st string defense at middle linebacker ahead of returner Jermaine Holmes. Holliday says a little competition isn’t a bad thing.
“We’ve finally got some depth. When you’ve got depth when guys aren’t going hard they watch.”
Holliday has also been pleased with Mitchell assuming a leadership role on defense.
“I like what Billy brings to the table. He’s extremely tough and knows what to do and he’s going to really help us.”
Frohnapfel Threw a Screen Pass!
It doesn’t take much to get excited during spring practice. Case and point… redshirt freshman, backup quarterback Blake Frohnapfel threw passes in practice on Thursday.
“.I didn’t expect that myself. He threw screens and some slants. At least he throws a spiral now. He won’t have any issues in four or five weeks,” said Holliday.
Only in spring practice do we get excited about the back up quarterback throwing his first passes of the spring.
