Bogaczyk Named Director of Publications/Editor of the Herd Insider

Jack Bogaczyk, a sports journalism veteran of more than four decades, has been named Director of Publications and Editor of the Herd Insider, Marshall Director of Athletics Mike Hamrick announced Friday.

Bogaczyk will write columns, features and news content for both HerdZone.com and the Herd Insider (a weekly magazine that covers the Thundering Herd), while working in cooperation with the Marshall Athletic Media Relations staff, including mentoring of staffers.

“We are excited to have Jack on board,” said Hamrick. “He brings a wealth of journalistic experience to Marshall Athletics and will immediately enhance our efforts to promote the student-athletes of Marshall University.”

Bogaczyk has been with the Charleston Daily Mail since October 2002 as columnist and has been the Daily Mail sports editor since December 2003, where the sports staff has won 42 West Virginia Press Association awards in the last five annual competitions.

He was named West Virginia Sportswriter of the Year in 2007 and 2009 by the state members of the National Sportscasters & Sportswriters Association.

“Jack’s addition is a tremendous development for our office,” said Jason Corriher, Marshall’s Asst. AD for Media Relations. “Our online and print content will benefit greatly from Jack’s presence, as we are constantly pursuing ways to advance the profile of Marshall Athletics.”

Bogaczyk, 62, previously served as first Media Relations Manager with the Roanoke Dazzle of the National Basketball Development League, the NBA’s minor league. Prior to that, he worked 27 years as a sports journalist for The Roanoke Times, including a decade (1991-2001) as the lead sports columnist.

Bogaczyk has covered the Atlanta Olympics, the Super Bowl, the World Series, multiple Daytona 500s, 11 NCAA Final Fours, 28 NCAA basketball tournaments, 11 different college bowl games, 11 seasons of Washington Redskins football and the NBA playoffs – in addition to local and regional sports.

He worked as a beat reporter, general assignment writer and columnist in Roanoke, and for 19 years wrote a Broadcast Sports column. He was the beat reporter covering Virginia Tech from 1980-88, and also has had minor league pro hockey as a beat.

Bogaczyk has been honored numerous times for his work; by the Associated Press Sports Editors, U.S. Basketball Writers Association, Football Writers Association of America, The National Sportscasters & Sportswriters Association, the West Virginia and Virginia Press Associations, Virginia Horse Council and the Virginia chapter of the U.S. Tennis Association.

He is a past board member or officer of the FWAA, USBWA, Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl. He is a standing nominee for the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame Media Award.

Prior to his years in Roanoke, Bogaczyk worked for The Sun-Bulletin in Binghamton, N.Y., and The Kentucky Post, in Covington, Ky.

He is a 1968 graduate of Covington Catholic (Ky.) High School and a 1972 graduate of the University of Kentucky, where he studied journalism. Bogaczyk was born in Elmira, N.Y., and grew up in Northern Kentucky.

Jack and his wife, Carol, have been married for 39-plus years.
