AARP, MetroNews partner to recognize scholar athletes

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – AARP West Virginia has announced an exciting partnership with the MetroNews Radio Network, focused on recognizing West Virginia high school student athletes for outstanding achievement in athletics, the classroom and in communities across the Mountain State.

During the 2013 fall sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, heard on more than 40 radio stations across the Mountain State 9:30 p.m. – Midnight each Friday night during the High School football season.

“AARP is an organization deeply committed to service and improving the quality of life in our communities for all as we age. We’re excited to recognize West Virginia’s best and brightest scholar athletes, who invest countless hours in the classroom and the athletic arena while making important contributions to their communities,” said Gaylene Miller, AARP West Virginia State Director.

West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement. Nomination forms are available online.
