Deadly fire in Wayne County

FORT GAY, W.Va. — The state Fire Marshal’s Office said Tuesday that a fatal fire in Wayne County appears to be accidental.

The blaze occurred Tuesday morning at a mobile home on Paddle Creek Road in the Fort Gay area.

A family friend says the victim is 66-year-old Diane Robertson.

The victim reportedly had a disability and needed help getting around. The state Fire Marshal’s Office said the victim’s son attempted to get into the home to rescue his mother.

The son was taken to the hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. His condition is unknown.

Investigators believe the fire started in the living room and appears to be accidental.

The victim’s body has been sent to the state Medical Examiner’s Office for positive identification and to determine the cause of death.
