New River drowning

MEADOW CREEK, W.Va. — A Fayette County man drowned Monday evening after his canoe capsized halfway through the Meadow Creek rapids on the New River in Summers County.

The National Parks Service said Gary Lee Adkins, 36, of Pax, and his two teenage stepsons were in a flat bottom canoe when it overturned at shortly after 5 p.m.

Park Rangers said one of the boys couldn’t swim so his brother pulled him to safety. The boy then went back into the water and brought Adkins to the riverbank where both boys attempted CPR.

An investigation into the drowning is underway.
