WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — His trademark beard rustling in the wind, Jase Robertson stepped onto the No. 1 tee box at the Old White TPC and embraced the sun-splashed 86-degree day.
“I could actually live here and I’ve been here five minutes—love it,” he said. “This is almost cold from where I came from.”
Robertson was joined at the Greenbrier pro-am by fellow “Duck Dynasty” star Justin Martin, the pair arriving from Louisiana just minutes ahead of their Wednesday afternoon tee time. Yet the scene hardly appeared rushed. After all, these fellows routinely make time for hugging up and chatting up fans who have grown enamored with their reality television show.
Outside the clubhouse they signed hats, programs—and even one woman’s shoe—while providing some down-home celebrity cache to a foursome that included resort owner Jim Justice and family friend Bubba Watson.
Watson may be the No. 3-ranked golfer in the world, but he’s still getting the hang of duck calling.
“I’m gonna help him, because he’s terrible,” Robertson said. “It sounds like something in distress.”
Watson befriended the duck call millionaires via Twitter, and on his first visit to West Monroe, La., dropped in on the family’s warehouse when Robertson was late returning from an out-of-town event.
When Robertson discovered Watson organizing the “Harlem Shake” video for Duck Commander, “I thought, well, I guess he feels right at home.”
Robertson, who took a respite from his book tour promoting “Good Call” to visit the Greenbrier, said he was anxious to hang out at Watson’s new house on the resort property.
“I think we’re going to Bubba’s and have a nice supper together. He said (wife) Angie could cook, so we’re going to test that out.”
