HUNTINGTON, W.Va.—After leading Marshall to a pair of bowl wins and a Conference USA title game, Doc Holliday has received a two-year contract extension.
Holliday, 57, is entering his fifth season as The Herd’s head coach and is now signed through the 2017-2018 academic year. Holliday’s annual salary of $600,000 will remain the same. Holliday will make a base salary of $175,000 a year and $425,000 in supplemental pay. That includes weekly radio and television appearances.
His new extension includes a bump in incentives. Holliday can earn an additional $30,000 for a C-USA championship and $30,000 for a bowl appearance.
Those are each increases of $10,000.
“Coach Holliday has made Marshall football relevant again,” Marshall Athletics Director Mike Hamrick said. “With his leadership, the Thundering Herd is on its way to competing for championships on a regular basis.”
Like his salary, Holliday’s buyout remains unchanged. If Holliday resigns, he would be obligated to pay $600,000 for every year remaining on the contract. However, if he were to take over as the head coach at West Virginia University, the buyout becomes $3 million.

Hamrick first mentioned a contract extension for Holliday to Metronews just days after Marshall’s 31-20 win over Maryland in the Military Bowl. Marshall’s 10-4 record last year was the team’s first ten wins season since 2002.
“Our people feel, I know I do, our president does, that our football program is in great shape and we want to keep Doc Holliday here at Marshall University for a long, long time,” Hamrick said on Metronews Talkline following the bowl win.

Holliday also received a one-year contract extension following the 2011 season when The Herd finished the year 7-6 and defeated FIU in the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl.
