Accused bank robber takes own life in regional jail

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state Regional Jail Authority confirmed Friday a Charleston man had committed suicide at the South Central Regional Jail. 

Basil Smith of Charleston was arrested Feb. 5 just a few minutes after he allegedly robbed a bank on the city’s West Side.

Jail workers found Basil Smith hanging in his cell Thursday afternoon.

Smith, 36, was pronounced dead at a Charleston hospital.

Smith was recently indicted after being arrested in February on charges that he allegedly robbed a Webanco branch on Charleston’s West Side.
