Autopsy scheduled for accident victim found dead in Cheat River

State Police have identified the man found dead Sunday morning in the Cheat River near Rowlesburg. Stephen Paul Maslen, 61, of Upperco, Md. was found Sunday when emergency crews responded to the scene of a single vehicle accident on Seven Islands Road, just off of U.S. Route 50.

“There was a pick up truck that had apparently struck concrete barriers, still running in the roadway,” said State Trooper C.W. DeBerry.

DeBerry says it appears Maslen got out of the truck to survey the damage to his vehicle and fell down a steep embankment.

“It’s a steep decline down to the river,” described DeBerry. “It’s probably 30 or 35 feet down to the river.”

Maslen’s body was transported to the state medical examiner’s office in Charleston for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

No foul play is suspected.
