Mason County home invasion leads to high-speed chase

LEON, W.Va. – Three people allegedly involved in a home invasion in Mason County were taken into custody near Huntington after a high-speed chase Tuesday.

The chase began on Route 2 in Cabell County with speeds exceeding 100 miles-per-hour. One of the suspects, 30-year-old Frankie Chapman of Huntington, stole a red pickup truck and drove sped away, police said. Before being arrested, one of the suspects shot at police and the officer returned fire, hitting the man in the arm.

State police spokesman Michael Baylous said no officers were injured, though one of the cruisers was damaged by the gunfire.

“You see incidents like this happen quite a bit around the country and many times it ends up a lot worse than what happened here,” Baylous said. “We very easily could have had an officer killed today who wouldn’t get to go home to their family. Not only an officer, but anybody within the public could have been injured in an incident like this.”

Police expect charges to be brought against all three suspects, ranging from attempted murder to armed robbery.
