Boone school board cooperates with investigation

MADISON, W.Va. — Boone County School Superintendent John Hudson is very guarded in his words regarding suspended Van High School Principal Garth Mock.

Mock, 43, was arrested Friday on charges of engaging in sexual activity with two female students ages 17 and 18.

“The Van Junior/Senior High School principal has been on leave from his job since about the end of January,” said Hudson. “During that time law enforcement conducted an investigating in which the school district has fully cooperated.”

Mock faced charges of sexual abuse and sexual abuse by a parent, guardian, custodian or person in a position of trust to a child.

“We were informed on Friday a warrant was issued for Mr. Mock’s arrest on the felony child of sexual abuse in the first degree,”said Hudson. “He was immediately suspended without pay and forbidden to enter upon school property or attend any school sponsored events.”

Police say the two teenage victims had traveled to Charleston to attend the Rough and Rowdy Brawl, but instead decided to go to Mock’s Kanawha City apartment where the alleged incidents occurred.

“We will follow this case in the courts and if and when the Board of Education does take additional action with regard to Mr. Mock’s employment it will happen at a public school board meeting,” Hudson said. “Obviously I’m not in a position to answer questions about this matter, but rest assured the Boone County School Board will do everything in its power to  keep students safe.”

Mock was released after posting a $10,000 dollar bond.
