Man killed after firing crossbow at police

MEADOW BRIDGE, W.Va. — A Fayette County man was shot and killed by police Thursday after he allegedly fired a crossbow at them.

State troopers and Summers County sheriff’s deputies were called to a domestic/hostage situation at a home on Buck Rub Trail in the Meadow Bridge area at about 4 p.m. Thursday according to West Virginia State Police. They were alerted ahead of time that Brian Johnson, 59, may have been planning a “suicide by cop” incident.

When police arrived they found Johnson armed with a crossbow. They said they told him several times to put the weapon down but he refused and fired it at them. State police said officers returned fire and Johnson was killed.

The woman involved in the domestic/hostage situation was not seriously injured
