Martinsburg policeman rescues dog from fire

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – A German Shepherd trapped in a house fire this week owes his life to a Martinsburg police officer and volunteer firefighter.

Bear’s owners were not home when fire broke out at their Virginia Ave.

Luckily Sgt. Craig Phelps, a K-9 officer with the Martinsburg Police Department, and Timothy Potts, an off-duty Baker Heights volunteer firefighter, found him inside when they managed to get through the front door of the two-story residence.

The Journal reports Bear was brought outside and collapsed in the street, leading Phelps to resuscitate the dog by rubbing its ribcage.

Potts supplied oxygen.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
