Phillip spearheads Gold’s win in West Virginia’s scrimmage

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Elijah Macon, Daxter Miles Jr. and Tarik Phillip each scored 10 points to lead the Gold team to a 46-24 win over the Blue squad in West Virgina’s 30-minute scrimmage Saturday night.

Phillip, competing to be the Mountaineers’ starting point guard, had a game-high eight rebounds along with three assists and three steals. He was 3-of-4 from the field, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range.

“Tarik has really worked hard on shooting the ball and has shot it really well,” coach Bob Huggins said. “I don’t think scoring is going to be a problem.

“We lost one of the best point guards in the country. The thing about (Juwan Staten), you couldn’t take the ball from him and you couldn’t trap him, so in late-game situations our ball security was a lot better.”

Nathan Adrian, recovering from wrist surgery, added seven points, as did Jaysean Paige.

Devin Williams paced the Blue squad with nine points and four rebounds, while Jonathan Holton scored eight and Jevon Carter added five points. Junior college transfer Teyvon Myers finished with two points and five rebounds.

“We’ve turned it over too much. We’ve got to do a better job with ball security,” said Huggins, whose squad returns eight of its top 10 players from last season’s 25-win team.

The Mountaineers will play an exhibition game Friday, Nov. 6 against Glenville State.
