WVU lands another junior college commitment from Lackawanna

Alex Woods of Lackawanna (Pa.) College is a 6-2 cornerback who also could play safety at West Virginia.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Lackawanna (Pa.) College cornerback Alex Woods became West Virginia’s fourth commitment for 2017, announcing his decision via Twitter Saturday night.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound Woods chose the Mountaineers over N.C. State, East Carolina and Troy. He plans to enroll next January and would have three seasons in which to play two, according to Rivals writer Keenan Cummings.

Woods played at Hillside High in Durham, N.C., the same program that produced former WVU four-star recruit Donte Thomas-Williams and Clemson Trevion Thompson.

An Old Dominion signee in 2015, Woods failed to qualify and went the junior college route to Lackawanna, which has become a feeder program for West Virginia. Since 2011, the Mountaineers have signed seven Lackawanna players: Mark Glowinski, Josh Francis, Dayron Wilson, Trevon Wesco and the White brothers—Kevin, Ka’Raun and Kyzir.

West Virginia experienced heavy turnover at cornerback this offseason with Daryl Worley, Terrell Chestnut and Rick Rumph departing, and the revolving door continues next season with seniors Rasul Douglas, Antonio Crawford and Nana Kyeremeh atop the depth chart.
