Vehicle wanted in Illinois Amber Alert spotted in West Virginia

MADISON COUNTY, IL — Police in West Virginia say they spotted a vehicle on Interstate 77 south Monday afternoon believed wanted in an Amber Alert that began in Illinois.

The Amber Alert was issued in Madison County, IL, in connection with the abduction of a teenage girl and her baby boy.

Katherine Derleth, 13, and her 18-day-old son, Christopher Derleth, were last seen in Edwardsville, IL, Sunday. Authorities believe they are with Katherine’s stepfather Christopher M. Derleth, 39. He is known to drive a green 1997 Mercury Villager van with Illinois license plate number E833210.

Christopher M. Derleth is an avid camper and may have stopped at a rural campground, authorities said.

Police are also worried about Katherine Derleth’s health. She has a pacemaker.

Kanawha County Metro 911 issued an alert at just before 5 p.m. Monday saying the vehicle was last seen traveling south on Interstate 77.

Anyone spotted the vehicle is asked to contact state police.
