INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State University has entered into an agreement with West Virginia Radio Corporation to provide coverage of Yellow Jacket basketball this season.

All of the school’s men’s basketball contests, both home and away, will be broadcast live on “The Beat”, WRVZ at FM 98.7, beginning with this weekend’s Earl Lloyd Conference Challenge games.

“We are thrilled to announce this partnership with West Virginia Radio Corporation,” WVSU Athletic Director Nate Burton said. “I feel that this partnership will prove to be extremely beneficial to us and will provide our passionate fan base with top-notch coverage of our men’s basketball team.”

Besides following the games on the radio, listeners anywhere in the world can tune in online at www.987thebeat.com or with the free iHeart radio app for smartphones. Broadcasts will begin 15 minutes prior to game time with a pre-game show featuring WVSU Head Coach Bryan Poore.

The Yellow Jackets are looking to have an outstanding season. Starters returning include last year’s leading scorer in sophomore Ernest Jenkins along with point guard Brent Bauer and forward Jayson Hankins.

“We are excited to partner with West Virginia State University to provide radio coverage in the Kanawha Valley on WRVZ-FM,” said Dale B. Miller, President and CEO of West Virginia Radio Corporation.

“The Mountain East Conference and West Virginia State are making great strides by fielding quality athletic programs,” Miller said. “FM 98.7 The Beat (WRVZ) will give the Yellow Jackets an outstanding signal for its fans to follow all season.”

Handling the play-by-play duties for the broadcasts will be veteran announcer Greg White.

White has 34 years of radio experience in Beckley, Oak Hill, and Charleston with 27 of those years being in sports broadcasting.

While at 580 WCHS-AM in Charleston he was part of a broadcast team named “Best Play-by-Play Broadcast” for six consecutive years by the West Virginia Broadcasters Association.

Since 2005 he has announced high school football and basketball games for 580-WCHS-AM, the local sister station to “The Beat”.

White retired from the Air National Guard in August, 2016, after nearly 28 years of service.

The Yellow Jackets open their season at 7:30 p.m. Friday when they face Johnson C. Smith. They take the court again at 4:00 p.m. Saturday against Elizabeth City State University.
