Police search for gunman in Charleston drug robbery

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Charleston Police have a warrant for the arrest of a man accused of firing shots in a drug deal which turned into an attempted robbery.

Police identify the shooting victim as Christopher Slater, 26, of Sissonville. He was shot at the Vandalia Apartments in Charleston.

“He was shot in the back during the robbery,” said Charleston Police Chief Steve Cooper. “He was up there, attempting to buy drugs.”

Slater was treated and released from the hospital where he self reported to seek treatment. He’s expected to recover. Now authorities are looking for the suspect, Christopher Bennett, 24, of Charleston. According to police he pulled the gun in an attempt to rob a woman who was at the home. Police have identified her as Elizabeth Barnett, 27, of St. Albans.

“I can say he was involved in the attempted purchase of illegal drugs,” said Cooper. “Which is a pretty common way to get shot.”

Bennett remained at large.
