CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Class AAA No. 5 George Washington added a key win on Tuesday night, beating defending state champion and No. 2 St. Albans 4-2.
The visiting Red Dragons (7-5) were held to just one hit in the loss.
Patriots’ starter Brayden McCallister gave up two runs (zero earned) and surrendered no hits in five innings, while Grant Wells struck out four in his two innings of relief, giving up just one hit.
It was Wells who delivered the go-ahead hit in the bottom of the fourth, breaking a 2-2 tie a two-run single. A double from Preston Taylor in the third scored Wells and Aidan Johnson, giving GW the initial 2-0 lead.
Chayce Matheny (2-2) suffered the loss on the mound for St. Albans, giving up four runs in five innings.
George Washington improved to 4-4 with the win, bouncing back nicely after a 1-3 stretch at the beach last week facing teams from South Carolina and North Carolina.
