No. 1 Hurricane adds top five win over GW with big 7th inning

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Class AAA No. 1 Hurricane took control of a 4-4 game with seven runs in the seventh inning on Thursday night to beat No. 5 George Washington 11-6.

Tyler Cox went 3 for 5 with two RBIs and a run scored in the win for the Redskins (13-2), while Austin Dearing finished 3 for 4 with two RBIs and Chandler Kelley went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Cox, Kelley and Dearing and had RBI hits in the top of the seventh — Kelley’s a two-RBI triple.

It was Cox getting the start for Hurricane on the mound, going five and 2/3 innings, giving up 4 runs (two earned) on six hits and striking out three. Noah Short finished the game on the mound for the Redskins, giving two runs on two hits and striking out two.

Aidan Johnson went 2 for 2 with three runs scored for George Washington (5-5), while Preston Taylor finished 2 for 3 with four RBIs in the loss.

The Patriots  had the early 2-0 lead before Hurricane added a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth. George Washington earlier in the week posted wins over No. 2 St. Albans and Spring Valley.
