John Marshall riding 24-game winning streak to states

GLEN DALE, W.Va. — John Marshall swept its best of three regional series over University this week, rolling to a 17-0 win over the Hawks on Tuesday and a 3-0 win on Wednesday.

Lauren Garcia threw a two-hitter in the win on Tuesday (gallery above) for John Marshall (28-1), also setting the tone at the plate with a three-run home run in the top of the first.

Garcia finished with nine strikeouts in the five innings of work.

Carli Lightner followed with a grand slam in the second inning for the Monarchs.

Lightner then picked up the win in Wednesday’s tighter 3-0 contest, collecting seven strikeouts along the way.

The Monarchs, last year’s state runner-up to Hurricane, enter state tournament play next week having won 24 straight games.

John Marshall will open up play next week on Wednesday, May 23 at 9:45 a.m. against either Hedgesville or Washington.
