Secretary of State’s Office warns of cybersecurity threats

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Secretary of State’s Office is warning political candidates and campaigns about the importance of protecting their information from cybersecurity threats.

A notice was sent Friday, a day after reports of a Russian intelligence agency targeting staffers of U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., through an email phishing scheme. McCaskill is running for re-election this year.

The state Secretary of State’s Office said in a letter Friday staffers should be cautious of hyperlinks from untrusted sources and attachments from unconfirmed email addresses. They also said campaigns should consider two-factor authentication for emails as well as stronger password policies.

Secretary of State Mac Warner and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security hosted a forum Monday in Morgantown on voting security.
