Mother, live-in boyfriend charged in 2-year-old’s death

PRINCETON, W.Va. — A two-year-old boy died at Charleston hospital Friday and police charged his mother and her live-in boyfriend in connection with his death.

John Powers

According to state police, the boy had suffered a number of injuries at the hands of John Powers, 46, of Green Valley, including burns and broken bones.

Power is charged with second-degree murder, death of a child by parent, guardian or custodian and child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury.

Troopers charged the boy’s mother, Candice Jones, 31, of Green Valley, with death of a child by parent, guardian or custodian and child neglect. She allegedly told police she saw Powers hurting her son but didn’t try to physically stop him.

A report in Saturday’s Bluefield Daily Telegraph details the alleged abuse contained in the criminal complaint filed by state police.
