CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia American Water Company, the staff of the Public Service Commission of West Virginia and the Consumer Advocate Division filed Thursday a proposal to utilize the utility’s tax savings and offer rate relief to customers.
The proposal would, beginning Sept. 1, reduce rates by $4.6 million and use savings to reduce the overall amount of revenue the company is seeking in the base rate case.
West Virginia American Water previously proposed to the commission a 24-percent rate increase following saving $11.4 million from the new tax law.
Kanawha County Commission President Kent Carper, who testified before the state commission about against the increase, applauded the move in a statement.
“I see this as progress and I thank West Virginia American Water and its President Brian Bruce for finding a responsible way to return monies to customers,” he said.
The proposal still has to be approved.
