WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — No. 18 West Virginia needed a late-regulation goal from Grace Cutler to force overtime in what became a 1-1 draw at Purdue on Friday night in women’s soccer action.
On the first day of this weekend’s Boilermaker Challenge Cup, the Mountaineers (0-1-2) remained winless through three matches and trailed Purdue (1-0-1) into the 86th minute.
That’s when WVU’s ninth corner kick of the night went long before Nadya Gill sent it into the box. Lauren Segalla one-timed it high to Cutler, whose header from 4 yards out scored in the high right post.
Purdue pushed ahead in the 74th minute when freshman Sydney Duarte scored on a cross from Sarah Clark.
West Virginia appeared to tie it in the 80th minute on a cross from Jordan Brewster to Segalla, but the goal was negated by an offside call.
Men’s soccer
West Virginia 2, College of Charleston 0: Second-half goals from midfielders Joey Piatczyc and Ethan Shim propelled the Mountaineers to a season-opening win in Charleston, S.C.
“Eleven guys played hard, and for us to find two goals on the road and get a shutout in front of that big of a crowd and that good of a team was a positive,” WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said.
Piatczyc scored in the 51st minute on a free kick from 22 yards, and he moved within one assist of the school record on Shim’s goal in the 72nd minute.
“Joey Piatczyc is a big-time player,” LeBlanc said. “A goal and an assist in his first game in over a year shows what we were missing last year, but it shows you how good the kid is and what we have in our time this year. He’s our engine, he’s our captain, and I think he proved that tonight.”
Sophomore goalkeeper Steven Tekesky made two saves, and West Virginia out-shot the College of Charleston 9-7.
