Board of Education members taking part in training sessions in Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Members of the West Virginia Board of Education, the people who oversee the Mountain State’s schools, will be in class on Monday and Tuesday.

Training sessions are scheduled Monday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the West Virginia Board of Education Boardroom at the State Capitol Complex in Charleston.

According to School Board President Dave Perry, holding the meetings in Charleston will save the state money.

“It’s cost savings to the taxpayers as we prudently use their money,” he said. “Over the last two years, we saved almost $250,000 linked directly to the West Virginia Board of Education. We no longer have an attorney, we no longer have an administrative head and we no longer have a field person.”

On the list of topics are ethics law, school finance and policy procedures.

“We definitely have a board that is very cohesive and wants to be directly involved with all the decisions and learning process,” Perry said.

About 20 states, including West Virginia, require county boards of education to complete training each year.

It’s the first time for such training in recent years.

Sessions will include Robert Hull, executive vice president of the National Association of State School Boards of Education, state Department of Education staff experts and those from other governmental agencies.

For the state board, “This session is a way of supporting them as they continue to pursue and execute critical business on behalf of our education system,” Perry said.
