State rejects bids for I-70 work

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Bids for bridge and paving work on Interstate 70 in Wheeling have been rejected, Gov. Jim Justice announced Monday.

The project includes repairing or replacing 25 bridges as well as paving on the Interstate 70 corridor. The lowest bid was $275,158,746, which the governor said was higher than expected.

The West Virginia Department of Transportation will review and evaluate the project so bids can be made again.

“We will remain prudent in the process while at the same time making sure we get this extremely important work done under my Roads to Prosperity plan,” Justice said.

Transportation Secretary Tom Smith said Justice has directed the department to “live within our means.”

“We will examine options to resize the scope of this necessary project so it may soon be re-advertised to encourage reduced costs,” Smith added.
