MASON COUNTY, W.Va. — A West Virginia State Police trooper was being treated for injuries sustained in an early Tuesday morning cruiser wreck on Route 2 in Mason County.

West Virginia State Police identified the trooper as 30-year-oldĀ Brian C. McCormick.

Investigators said the trooper’s cruiser ran off Route 2 in Ashton where it caught fire after hitting a tree and a passing driver spotted the cruiser and pulled the trooper away from the burning vehicle.

The wreck happened around 3:40 a.m. Tuesday.

State Police were investigating along with deputies from the Mason County Sheriff’s Department.

Route 2 was closed in the wreck area at one point Tuesday but has since re-opened.
