Clarksburg fire claims man’s life

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — A man was killed and several children were briefly hospitalized after a residential fire in the Broad Oaks area of Clarksburg Tuesday morning.

Dispatchers received word of the fire at a two-story home at 217 Austin Avenue at around 9:17 a.m.

According to a tweet from the state Fire Marshal’s Office, one person died in the blaze and two people are hospitalized.

Dispatchers said a 60-year-old victim was in a bedroom near a set of stairs where the fire broke out and unable to escape the home.

There were four children in the house at the time of the fire. They were taken to United Hospital Center as a precaution, according to the Clarksburg fire chief.

Clarksburg Fire, Clarksburg Police and Harrison County EMS responded to the scene.

The names of those involved have not been released.

The cause of the fire is not yet known at this time. The victim’s body was sent to the state Medical Examiner’s Office.
