Two men arrested after breaking into abandoned Boone County mine

BOONE COUNTY, W.Va. — Two Raleigh County men have been charged with breaking and entering and grand larceny after breaking into an abandoned coal mine.

Boone County Deputies say Corey Bryant, 31, and Justin Raynes, 31, were taken into custody Tuesday night for the incident that took place in the Jasper Workman area of Bald Knob.

Authorities said that both were taken into custody without incident after they were notified of someone possibly being inside that abandoned mine.

Last week in Boone County, two people were arrested outside of a different mine in a copper theft investigation.

In a release about the incident, Chief Deputy Chad Barker said, “This incident occurred at a different mine than the one a week ago but in the same general area. It is a disturbing trend with people entering abandoned mines to steal copper wiring. I can’t stress how dangerous this idea is, and it’s only a matter of time before we get a less desirable ending.”

The bond for Bryant and Raynes are set at $50,000 each and they are being held in the Southwestern Regional Jail.
