Kentucky man sentenced for January bank robbery

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — A Kentucky man who robbed a Wayne County bank in January will spend more than five years in prison.

Steve Ray Meeks, 62, of Louisa, Kentucky, was sentenced Monday to 63 months in prison.

He previously pleaded guilty to bank robbery; he admitted to robbing the Community Trust Bank in Fort Gay on Jan. 12.

Meeks approached the bank wearing a hood and a ski mask, and attempted to enter the bank after it had closed. He later attempted to enter the bank after it opened, brandishing a weapon and requesting the tellers put money in a bag he had brought with him. He also made threats to individuals inside.

Police later determined Meeks had a BB gun rather than a handgun.

Meeks then drove into Kentucky, where law enforcement stopped him following a pursuit.
