West Virginia adds a side of Mayo to top off 2019 signing class

By Alex Hickey
February 6, 2019 - 4:11 pm
Cornerback Tavian Mayo was the final signee in West Virginia's Class of 2019.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Cornerback Tavian Mayo, a long-time West Virginia target from Leesburg, Ga., finalized his relationship with the Mountaineers as the final player to sign a letter of intent with the program in the current recruiting cycle. Mayo signed with West Virginia on Wednesday afternoon.

Mayo was heavily recruited by Dana Holgorsen’s staff, but Neal Brown came to WVU fully aware of his capabilities. A pair of Mayo’s high school teammates played for Brown at Troy, though at that time he was aware landing a player of Mayo’s caliber was likely unrealistic.

“We’ve known about Tay for a long time,” Brown said. “I believe he watched a couple games at Troy to see his friends. The logo switch was very effective. He took an official visit with the previous staff, so he liked West Virginia. We were able to close that late.”

Brown cited Mayo as a player who will have an opportunity to get on the field as a freshman.

“He’s going to have an opportunity to compete right away,” Brown said. “He has a chance to be starter for several years.”

Brown said the Mountaineers will look to fill the remaining three spots in the class in the coming months, with the possibility of rolling the scholarships over towards next year’s class if the right fits are not available.
