BLUEFIELD, Va. — The search continues after a Bluefield, Virginia police officer was shot during a traffic stop over the weekend.
“During the course of the traffic stop Donquale Grey began shooting at and wounded the officer who was standing just outside the vehicle by the drivers’ side door,” said Corinne Geller, spokesperson for the Virginia State Police.
Grey, age 25, is from Bluefield, West Virginia. The traffic stop happened near exit 3 of U.S. Route 460 in the Bluefield, Virginia city limits around 11:45 p.m. Saturday. Grey was a passenger in the vehicle. The wounded officer and another law enforcement officer who had just arrived as backup both returned fire on the vehicle.
“The driver exited the vehicle and got on the ground,” explained Geller. “Grey slid into the drivers seat and took off.”
The wounded officer is hospitalized in a Roanoke, Virginia hospital with serious injuries, but Geller described the wound as “non-life threatening.” The search for Grey involves multiple agencies, including the Virginia and West Virginia State Police along with the U.S. Marshal Service. The Marshal Service has posted a $5,000 reward for information which leads to Grey’s arrest and conviction.
“We have received numerous tips coming in from the public which we appreciate that, and we’re still encouraging people to come forward on Grey and his whereabouts,” said Geller. “As a result search warrants have been obtained and the Virginia State Police, and U.S. Marshal Service along with the West Virginia authorities continue to pursue those leads.”
