Herron suspended as Wheeling city manager after DUI charge

WHEELING, W.Va. — The Wheeling City Council voted Monday to place City Manager Robert Herron on administrative leave after allegedly driving under the influence and getting involved in a vehicle incident over the weekend.

Council members voted unanimously after more than three hours in executive session.

Herron was arrested Saturday night and charged for the incident near 16th and Market streets. The wreck involved a Wheeling city vehicle.

Authorities said Herron had a .305 blood alcohol content level.

“To a person, we on city council are deeply troubled by the alleged conduct involving City Manager Robert Herron. As this is a pending legal matter, we are withholding further comment at this time. As this matter moves forward, it is imperative that the business of the city go on,” the council said in a statement.

Wheeling Fire Chief Larry Helms will serve as acting city manager. Herron will have to surrender all city equipment during his suspension.
