Attorney General, drug companies reach agreement on blood thinner

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The office of West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey announced Thursday it has finalized a multi-million dollar settlement regarding the prescription blood thinner Plavix.

The settlement with Bristol-Myers Squibb Company and Sanofi-Aventis resolved issues in marketing Plavix as superior to aspirin despite no evidence supporting if certain usages were more effective.

Bristol-Myers Squibb and Sanofi-Aventis will each be responsible for paying $1.6 million with the settlement totaling $3.2 million.

Both companies and its subsidiaries denied any wrongdoing as part of the agreement.
