Man in custody following Beckley shooting

BECKLEY, W.Va. — Police were able to chase down a man they believe was involved in a shooting in Beckley Sunday afternoon.

Angelo Johnson, 23, was taken into custody near Beaver. According to police, Johnson was in a car that was spotted on Grady Avenue at about 4:30 p.m. Sunday when several shots were fired. A man was injured and taken to a hospital.

The car was spotted a short time later and a Beckley police officer tried to make a traffic stop. The driver then took off at a high rate of speed. The car stopped near Beaver where Johnson and others got out and ran.

Johnson is charged with malicious wounding, 11 counts of wanton endangerment and felony fleeing. He’s in the Southern Regional Jail. Witnesses at the shooting scene identified Johnson and others, police said. Officers anticipate additional arrests.

Police did not immediately release the shooting victim’s name. He’s in stable condition at a Beckley hospital.
