Speed limit cut on Turnpike portion in Mercer County

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia Highways Commissioner Jimmy Wriston signed an order Friday reducing the speed limit on a six-mile portion of the West Virginia Turnpike to 60 miles per hour.

The stretch in question is in Mercer County between Camp Creek and Flat Top (milepost 20.43 to milepost 26.2.)

“Upon the recommendation of the West Virginia Parkways Authority and their Engineering team, as well as the WVDOH Traffic Division, we were able to put this safety measure in place and I am happy to do so,” Wriston said in a press release. “The order will remain in effect until the results of an engineering and traffic investigation has concluded and Parkways has installed planned safety features.”

The West Virginia Parkways Authority also ordered increase State Police presence, as well as flashing chevrons and changeable message boards.

A third Public Service Commission Enforcement Officer will deal with truck traffic in the area.
