State police say woman killed after “lunging” at troopers with claw hammer

WELCH, W.Va. — State police released additional information Friday afternoon about a deadly shooting involving two troopers in McDowell County nearly a week ago.

According to the release, troopers responded to a call at approximately 9:10 p.m., Sunday, April 28, involving an unwanted person at the Stop Abusive Family Environments (SAFE) facility near Welch.

Troopers said they found Shawna Widemann, 49, of Welch, armed with a claw hammer banging on the door. The SAFE facility was placed on lockdown.

According to the information released Friday, “The suspect ignored commands from the troopers to drop the weapon and lunged at one of the troopers in a threatening manner prior to both troopers discharging their duty weapons. The suspect was later pronounced dead at the scene.”

State police have not named the troopers involved. They are currently on critical incident leave as an investigation takes place.
