Vehicle accidents occur nearly simultaneously on Wheeling Island; one dead

WHEELING, W.Va. — First responders in Wheeling were busy Friday morning on Wheeling Island as two vehicle accidents occurred no less than five minutes apart.

Wheeling Police and Fire spokesman Philip Stahl told MetroNews that around 9:30 a.m. a male died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in the parking lot of Wheeling Island Casino that caused a single vehicle accident.

Authorities said the driver appeared to shoot himself while leaving the facility in his truck as the vehicle then hit a utility pole in the parking lot.

Wheeling Police are treating the investigation as an apparent suicide.

Stahl said no more than five minutes after that incident was reported, a vehicle drove into a vacant house on the island on Zane Street.

Authorities said there were no injuries in the crash as Stahl called it an “operator error” by the driver.
