Equifax claims process now open

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginians impacted by the 2017 Equifax data breach can now file claims to receive restitution.

The fund, worth $425 million, comes in light of a data breach which exposed the personal information of 147 million people across the country.

According to state Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, more than 730,000 West Virginians were affected, increasing their risk for identity theft and fraud.

“Our settlement now gives consumers a chance to recoup unauthorized charges to their accounts or money spent to secure their identities in the days that followed,” Morrisey said.

Equifax is also responsible for paying $2.4 million to West Virginia.

People affected by the data breach may file a claim for free credit monitoring or cash payment.

Eligible consumers can file a claim at https://www.ftc.gov/equifax. Claims must be filed by Jan. 22, 2020.
