Mourners turn out in Roane County to remember high school football player after his death

Mourners were part of a candlelight vigil on Saturday night, Sept. 15, for Alex Miller, a Roane County football player who died after collapsing at a game on Friday night.

ROANE COUNTY, W.Va. — Candles were lit Saturday night at Roane County High School in memory of Alex Miller, the senior wide receiver for the Raiders who died after collapsing on the sideline during Friday night’s game against Clay County.

Those attending formed a large circle in Spencer as a sign of remembrance to close a day during which doors at Roane County High were open to the community offering space for grieving.

There was no immediate word on what caused Miller’s death.

Funeral arrangements were pending as of Sunday morning.

On Tuesday, students at high schools in other parts of West Virginia were being asked to wear maroon to show support for the Roane County Raiders.
