Man charged after attempted attack on Kanawha County medics

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. — A man is behind bars after allegedly attempting to stab two Kanawha County medics with a knife.

According to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office, Richard Thorton indicated he was on methamphetamine and possibly bath salts while near the old Herbert High School building around 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Kanawha County medics put Thorton in an ambulance, but Thorton pulled out a concealed knife while the ambulance was on the interstate.

The driver slammed on the brakes, and both medics escaped the vehicle. Thorton allegedly chased one of the medics on the interstate.

Kanawha County authorities arrested Thorton, who faces two counts of attempted murder.

One of the medics was taken to the hospital due to chest pains.
