WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — The president of West Liberty University is retiring.
On Tuesday, President Stephen Greiner announced he’ll be stepping down from his position leading the Ohio County institution on June 30, 2020.
He could stay on longer, though, if necessary, to help with the transition to a new president.
“It has been the greatest honor of my professional life to serve West Liberty University during the last four years,” Greiner said.
Greiner is a Weirton native.
He was hired as West Liberty’s president in 2015 following the resignation of former President Robin Capehart and officially took over on Jan. 1, 2016.
“The opportunity to come back here and to give back to the Northern Panhandle where I grew up was just too good of an opportunity to miss,” Greiner told MetroNews.
“It doesn’t happen to too many people — the opportunity to go back home and work with people that you grew up with and that you’ve known and work in an area and give back to an area that gave you so much.”
Greiner, who will be 74 when he retires, has worked in higher education for 46 years.
Before his arrival at West Liberty, he was president and CEO of Hazard Community and Technical College in Hazard, Ky.
Previously, Greiner served as president for both Brunswick Community College in North Carolina and Virginia Intermont College in Briston, Va.
He and his wife, Nancy, have a home in coastal North Carolina.
A search committee has been formed to lead the hiring of Greiner’s replacement.
