Marshall County father accused of killing young son

MARSHALL COUNTY, W.Va. — A preliminary court hearing was scheduled for Dec. 13 in Marshall County for the father who’s accused of killing his son, age three months, by violently shaking him and causing brain bleeding.

The charge against Daniel Jacob Messner, 25, of McMechen, was death of a child by a parent.

In November, the boy died at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Monongalia County a few days after a 911 call from Messner’s home about an unconscious child.

Doctors first at Wheeling Hospital in Ohio County and then at Ruby determined the baby had suffered serious brain damage during “extreme violence,” likely while being shaken and possibly strangled, according to investigators.

Bond was set at $500,000 for Messner.

He was being held in the Northern Regional Jail.
