Strong fourth quarter lifts Chapmanville past Wheeling Park in CRC

WHEELING, W.Va. — Chapmanville limited Wheeling Park to just seven fourth quarter points as the Tigers defeated the Patriots 61-48 in the opening game of the 13th annual Cancer Research Classic.

The Tigers erased a three-point halftime deficit with a 10-0 run to open the second half and they held the lead the rest of the way.

“I thought we played with a lot more energy in the second half but especially in the fourth quarter,” said Chapmanville head coach Brad Napier. “We had some young guys step up in the first half and really got us going when we were struggling.”

The Patriots held three-point leads after the first quarter and at halftime. Alex Vargo led Park (5-2) with 21 points. Xavier Morris added 13 points and Travis Zimmerman chipped in with 10.

Philip Mullins led all scorers with 23 points. He connected on 9 of 19 shots from the floor and also pulled down five rebounds.

“They were kind of scheming to take (Andrew) Shull away. That left Philip open to get off a little bit.”

Marshall signee Obinna Anochili-Killen filled up the stat sheet with an impressive double-double — 17 points and 14 rebounds. He also blocked six shots and collected four steals.

“Obinna changes a lot with his length. He can alter shots and he can block shots. Anytime you drive the ball, you have to be worried about him coming over and swatting it away.”

Since dropping their season opener, the Tigers (6-1) have won six in a row. They face a quick turnaround and another long road trip next. CHS will battle Bluefield (5-1) at the New River CTC Invitational Saturday evening in Beckley.

“It is going to be tough. Bluefield I am sure is going to be ready to go. We have to make a five hour drive there tonight and get ready to play tomorrow. These are the things that you hope prepare you for March.”
