Steady rain continues to cause concern in West Virginia

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Forecasters at the Charleston Weather Bureau say there is a possibility high water could become an issue again later this week. Steady rain Monday could create some swollen streams in southern West Virginia, but it’s a system approaching on Wednesday which causes Meteorologist Ross Giarratana the most concern.

“We’re really going to be watching Wednesday night into Thursday morning. We think that will be more area wide and that system could give us an inch and a half to two inches of rains.,” he said.

Most of the streams had a couple of days over the weekend to recede from the brink of flooding, but with super soaked soil it won’t take much for them to refill and spill over their banks.

“Our soils are so saturated from all the rain we had late last week and the last seven days, any additional moisture at this point does bring a concern for flooding.” Giarratana said.

All of the systems in recent days have come out of the south and brought with the mild and warm temperatures. There is a chance for an arctic front later this week, but it’s impacted is expected to be minimal as another southern flow will return and bring temperatures back into the 50’s and 60’s.
