BU holds off Musselman in overtime, 73-71

TENNERTON, W.Va. — Musselman rallied back from a 15-point first half deficit to force overtime, but Buckhannon-Upshur held on in the extra session to pick up an impressive win over the Applemen, 73-71.

Tied at 69 with 30 seconds left in overtime, the Bucs used a pair of free throws and a Ryan Strader transition layup to take a lead they would not relinquish.

Buckhannon-Upshur jumped out to a 14-4 lead after the first quarter and they extended that cushion to 23-8 midway through the second quarter.

“We really struggled all year in winning the first quarter,” said Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Travis Foster. “Tonight was one of those games where we knew they were going to come in and kick our butts if we didn’t hit our (defensive) angles. That quarter won us the game.”

The Applemen trailed 29-18 but used a 14-6 third quarter run to trim the deficit to 43-38 heading into the final quarter. MHS used a 13-2 run to take a 51-45 lead with just over four minutes to play. The Buccaneers however went on an 11-2 run to force overtime.

Ryan Hurst led the Bucs with 23 points. Strader added 15 points. Harrison Walker and Lamar Hurst chipped in with 13 and 12 points respectively.

T.J. Stuckey led the Applemen (11-8) with 12 points. Caleb Hardy and Isaiah Horner scored ten points each. Musselman will visit defending state champion University Tuesday.

Buckhannon-Upshur improved to 11-8 with a quality victory over a 2019 state quarterfinalist.

“Our battles in practice and our attention to detail really got us over the hump tonight. That intensity you saw tonight on the floor, we have had that in practice,” Foster said. “Musselman is coached very well and they are always in the running at the end of the year. It just shows where our program is growing.”
